Role Overview
- Leadership role responsible for development, financing, and execution of utility-scale and behind-the-meter battery energy storage systems (BESS)
- Focus on ISO markets including NYISO, ISO-NE, and PJM
- Delivery target of 5–10 grid-scale battery projects
- Utilisation of 5-hour and 10-hour battery technologies via a technology joint venture
- Full lifecycle responsibility from market selection through financial close and construction start
- Mandate to commence construction on first project by Q4 2026
- Hybrid execution model: direct delivery of certain workstreams and management of external consultants and contractors
Strategic Leadership & Market Development
- Develop and execute grid-scale and behind-the-meter battery deployment strategy
- Identify and prioritise optimal ISO markets, use cases, and battery configurations (5-hour vs 10-hour)
- Align battery technology capabilities with market requirements, regulatory conditions, and interconnection constraints
- Monitor ISO rule changes and regulatory developments impacting storage revenues
Incentives, Policy & Regulatory Management
- Maintain up-to-date expertise in federal, state, and utility-level incentive programmes (tax credits, grants, competitive solicitations)
- Lead applications, bids, and negotiations for government and utility incentive programmes
- Integrate incentive assumptions into financial models and project selection
- Track evolving regulatory frameworks impacting storage economics
Site Origination, Land & Interconnection
- Identify and secure sites for front-of-the-meter and behind-the-meter projects
- Negotiate land leases, purchase options, easements, and site control agreements
- Lead ISO and utility interconnection processes (queue submissions, system studies, coordination)
- Evaluate interconnection costs, timelines, and risks to inform project prioritisation
Financial Modelling & Project Evaluation
- Develop and oversee detailed project-level financial models across multiple markets
- Model revenue streams including:
- Capacity markets
- Energy arbitrage
- Ancillary services
- Customer savings (BTM projects)
- Assess capital expenditure, degradation, augmentation, interconnection costs, operating expenses, and incentives
- Rank and select top five projects based on returns, risk profile, and execution readiness
Financing & Commercial Structuring
- Engage banks, tax equity investors, infrastructure funds, and strategic partners
- Structure and negotiate project finance, tax equity, and joint venture equity arrangements
- Lead commercial negotiations for:
- EPC contracts
- O&M agreements
- Long-term service and warranty agreements
- Coordinate battery supply agreements and performance guarantees with technology partner
Project Execution & Delivery
- Oversee EPC contractors and development partners through pre-construction and construction phases
- Manage schedules, budgets, and risk mitigation strategies
- Coordinate commissioning, testing, and market registration with utilities and ISOs
- Ensure projects reach construction start and progress toward commercial operation on schedule
Performance Objectives
- Deliver fully developed and financially modelled top five battery storage projects
- Secure land control and interconnection positions for multiple viable projects
- Successfully obtain or qualify for key incentive programmes
- Secure financing for at least one project
- Achieve construction approval/start on first project by Q4 2026
Required Experience
- 7+ years’ experience in energy storage, renewable energy, or power infrastructure development
- Demonstrated experience within NYISO, ISO-NE, and/or PJM markets
- Strong project-level financial modelling and energy market economics expertise
- Experience negotiating land, EPC, and financing agreements
- Knowledge of federal and state energy incentives and regulatory frameworks
- Proven ability to manage utilities, ISOs, financiers, and contractors
Preferred Experience
- Direct development or operational experience with grid-scale BESS
- Experience with long-duration energy storage (5+ hours)
- Background in tax equity or infrastructure finance
- Established relationships with EPC contractors, utilities, or financial institutions
