Position Overview
The Product Manager for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) is a highly visible and critical role responsible for owning the strategy, development, and lifecycle management of grid-scale and commercial energy storage products. Battery energy storage systems integrate lithium-ion battery technology with power conversion systems (PCS), energy management systems (EMS), thermal management, controls, and balance-of-plant components to deliver reliable, flexible, and dispatchable energy solutions.
These BESS products are deployed across utility-scale, commercial & industrial (C&I), and hybrid renewable energy applications to support grid stability, peak shaving, energy arbitrage, renewable integration, and resiliency.
This role collaborates closely with senior leadership and cross-functional teams to drive growth and profitability by defining product strategy, developing and maintaining product roadmaps, and launching new battery storage offerings into the market.
The Product Manager serves as a technical and commercial subject-matter expert for BESS technologies and energy storage solutions.
Strong collaboration is required with Product Marketing, Sales, Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Project Management, and Service to successfully execute new product development initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive the Product Development Process (PDP) for battery energy storage systems by conducting market and customer research, gathering technical and commercial requirements, and translating needs into clear product features, system architectures, and performance specifications.
- Own the end-to-end product strategy and operational roadmap for a portfolio of physical, technical products including battery racks, containers, power conversion systems (PCS), energy management systems (EMS), thermal management, fire suppression, and balance-of-plant solutions.
- Conduct focused market research to identify opportunities within utility-scale and C&I energy storage markets, including required BESS capabilities, technology trends, competitive positioning, market size, and pricing dynamics.
- Develop and maintain Product Requirements Documents (PRDs) that clearly communicate functional, technical, regulatory, and performance requirements for BESS platforms to engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain teams.
- Partner closely with engineering and manufacturing teams to balance system performance, safety, reliability, availability, lifecycle degradation, cost, manufacturability, and scalability of battery storage solutions.
- Plan and execute product launch strategies, including messaging, positioning, and value propositions, in collaboration with product marketing.
- Analyze product costs, margins, and pricing structures to identify opportunities for cost reduction, margin expansion, and profitable growth across the BESS product portfolio.
- Monitor product performance, operational data, field reliability metrics, and warranty trends to identify opportunities for product improvements, platform standardization, and portfolio optimization.
- Build and maintain relationships with customers, integrators, suppliers, and industry organizations involved in battery storage, power electronics, and grid infrastructure.
- Establish strong cross-functional partnerships with engineering, project management, operations, supply chain, quality, and strategic marketing teams to ensure alignment and execution throughout the product lifecycle.
- Support the sales organization through technical training, sales tools, product demonstrations, and customer engagements related to battery energy storage systems.
Minimum Requirements
Education
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Technology, Business, or Marketing required
- Advanced degree in Engineering, Energy Systems, Power Electronics, or MBA preferred
Experience
- 5+ years of experience in product engineering, electrical or mechanical engineering, or product management of a manufactured, physical technical product
- Demonstrated experience with battery energy storage systems, power electronics, inverters, microgrids or renewable energy infrastructure
- Proven experience leading cross-functional teams across engineering, manufacturing, project execution, and commercial functions
- Strong ability to analyze technical, financial, and operational data to support product strategy and lifecycle decisions
Technical & Professional Skills
- Strong technical understanding of BESS architectures, including batteries, PCS, EMS, thermal management, and balance-of-plant
- Familiarity with battery performance characteristics, degradation mechanisms, safety considerations, and warranty structures
- Ability to speak, read, write, and interpret technical documentation, electrical schematics, system architectures, and grid requirements
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail
